Granada: General Information
Granada, located in Andalucia, is a high altitude city of romance and folklore. During the period of Muslim domination of Spain, Granada was the finest city on the peninsula. Today it is still home to one of the most impressive and well-kept piece of Moorish architecture in all of Spain, the greatest Muslim legacy in Europe and one of the most inspiring attractions on the Continent - the 11th century Alhambra.
Set against the stunning backdrop of the Sierra Nevada Mountains, surrounded by cypress and elms, the huge complex includes the Alcazaba, the Palacio Nazaries (Nasrid Palace) and the Generalife gardens.
On the hill opposite the Alhambra, The Albaicin (or Albayzin), site of the eighth-century Moorish court, is the Islamic quarter of Granada filled with a maze of cobble-stoned lanes. Atop the hill, the Mirador San Nicolas, offers a magnificent view over the city, the Alhambra and the Sierra Nevada. The Sacromonte district is famous for its cave dwellings that were once the home of a large gypsy community, renowned for their flamenco skills.
Be sure to visit the city’s cathedral and the Royal Chapel, with the extravagant tombs of the Catholic conquerors, King Fernando and Queen Isabel.
